Aussies tend to be sceptics. We don’t believe things simply because someone in authority says them. We are particularly reluctant to believe that impossible things happen!
Matthew 27:57-28:20 focuses our attention on one central event- the physical, literal, bodily resurrection of Jesus Christ from the grave. The first and fifth sections, and the second and third sections, work like a double frame to focus our attention on the middle section, which describes that Jesus is alive and risen from the grave.
- 27:57-61 Jesus dead and buried
- 27:62-66 Setting of the guard
- 28:1-10 Jesus is alive, risen, tomb is empty
- 28:11-15 Report of the guard
- 27:62-66 Setting of the guard
- 28:16-20 Jesus alive and sovereign
5 The angel said to the women,
“Do not be afraid, for I know that you are looking for Jesus, who was crucified. 6 He is not here; he has risen, just as he said. Come and see the place where he lay. 7 Then go quickly and tell his disciples: ‘He has risen from the dead and is going ahead of you into Galilee. There you will see him.’ Now I have told you.”
The report of the angels and subsequently the women is that Jesus has risen from the dead. But this seems unbelievable – for dead people do not rise!
Let us consider the alternatives to Jesus’ resurrection. Alternative theories! Then with the evidence considered, let us consider the implications of the evidence!
