Easter Sunday- Believing the Unbelievable

Easter Sunday- Believing the Unbelievable

Aussies tend to be sceptics. We don’t believe things simply because someone in authority says them. We are particularly reluctant to believe that impossible things happen!

Matthew 27:57-28:20 focuses our attention on one central event- the physical, literal, bodily resurrection of Jesus Christ from the grave. The first and fifth sections, and the second and third sections, work like a double frame to focus our attention on the middle section,  which describes that Jesus is alive and risen from the grave.

  • 27:57-61 Jesus dead and buried
    • 27:62-66 Setting of the guard
      • 28:1-10 Jesus is alive, risen, tomb is empty
    • 28:11-15 Report of the guard
  • 28:16-20 Jesus alive and sovereign

The angel said to the women,

“Do not be afraid, for I know that you are looking for Jesus, who was crucified. He is not here; he has risen, just as he said. Come and see the place where he lay. Then go quickly and tell his disciples: ‘He has risen from the dead and is going ahead of you into Galilee. There you will see him.’ Now I have told you.”

The report of the angels and subsequently the women is that Jesus has risen from the dead. But this seems unbelievable –  for dead people do not rise!

Let us consider the alternatives to Jesus’ resurrection. Alternative theories!  Then with the evidence considered, let us consider the implications of the evidence!
