Hearing but never understanding

Hearing but never understanding

Jesus preaches in parables so that those listening will be:

ever listening but never understanding … ever seeing but never perceiving. (Mt 13:14)

This seems quite paradoxical. Why then does Jesus teach in parables? And how then are we to understand parables?  Specifically, what does this well known “Parable of the Sower” (Matthew 13 ) mean for us who live in a city nearly two millennia later?

Jesus Himself answers the question of why He spoke in parables and explains the meaning of this captivating agrarian story. Everyone finds themselves described in the story – it acts like a mirror.  Which soil are you and what difference is that making to your life now?
