Praying to Know and Knowing to Pray

Praying to Know and Knowing to Pray

Praying to Know God and to Know How to Live for God in Power

Having reminded us of God’s lavish blessings in Christ (Eph 1:1-14), the Apostle Paul then challenges the readers to seek to know God better and know what God has done for us in Christ (Ephesians 1:15-24).

I pray that … “the God of our Lord Jesus Christ, the glorious Father may give you the Spirit of wisdom and revelation, so that you may know him better.”

Paul prays that Christians may especially KNOW:

  • the hope to which we are called
  • the riches of His glorious inheritance, and
  • His incomparably great power for all who believe

Paul reminds us that faith and reason go together. True faith is built on a foundation of knowing the certainty of the gospel. Since God had the power to raise Christ from the dead and seat him at his right hand in the heavenly realms, he has power to enable us through His Spirit to know him and have faith in him, and love one another. Real hope arises from knowing what God has done for us in Christ.
