The Good Shepherd

The Good Shepherd

Following on from healing the blind man Jesus calls on people to listen to His voice.

In this famous passage Jesus describes Himself as the good shepherd. Unlike the false shepherds of God’s people, the good shepherd is fiercely committed to His sheep. He knows every one by name and cares deeply for their needs. He leads them and ensures their safely.

The good shepherd is so committed that He willingly lays down His life. Speaking of His approaching self-sacrifice, Jesus talks of His authority in terms of giving His life for the good of His people.  And in a striking pointer to His resurrection, Jesus also talks of having authority to take up His life again.

The call here is to listen to God’s Son, the good shepherd, and to trust His leadership.
