The Power of a Name

The Power of a Name

In Acts 4 Peter is asked a probing question by the Sadducees;

“By what power or what name did you do this?” (Acts 4:7)

The miracle of the healing of the congenital cripple was evident to all. It was clear that the disciples had demonstrated great power (and great courage). But how were ordinary, unschooled men able to preach with such power and perform such extraordinary miracles?

Peter responds emphatically to their question;

It is by the name of Jesus Christ of Nazareth, whom you crucified but whom God raised from the dead, that this man stands before you healed. (Acts 4:10)

In a summary of the exclusive claims of the gospel, Peter then declares;

Salvation is found in no one else, for there is no other name under heaven given to mankind by which we must be saved.” (Acts 4:12)

What the implications of this for us today?
