Unity, Diversity and Maturity

Unity, Diversity and Maturity

God desires his church on Earth to be unified in its diversity moving towards maturity in Christ. Ephesians 4:1-16

God is unity, three distinct persons in one God; One Spirit (v4), One Son (v5), One Father (v6).  The basis for us as God’s Church having unity is God’s unity (v3);

There is:

one body and

one Spirit, just as you were called to

one hope when you were called;

one Lord,

one faith,

one baptism;

one God and Father of all, who is over all and through all and in all (4: 4-6).

God’s Church on Earth is diverse, with people from many different ethnic, social, and economic backgrounds. We are people with different interests, families, jobs, experiences, political perspectives, sexual orientations, amounts of wealth, and education – even some different beliefs. Indeed, God gave people many different gifts, but with one purpose,

so that the body of Christ may be built up until we all reach unity in the faith and in the knowledge of the Son of God and become mature…”

(Eph 4:13)

Unity in Christ will mean Christians will (v1)

live a life worth of the calling we have received”

Our lives will be characterised by (v2);

  1. humility
  2. gentleness
  3. patience
  4. forbearance
  5. love

Consequently, we will not be tossed about by the winds of the world’s teaching and the deceit of the world, but be able to grow to maturity in Christ, and speak the truth in love (v14-16).
