Here Jesus responds to the charge that he broke Jewish Law by healing a lame man on the Sabbath day. However Jesus ‘defence’ quickly escalates into an even more controversial drama centring upon the question of Jesus authority.
This hard-edged passage takes place in a context where the religious authorities are already trying to kill Jesus.
In this section, which is almost exclusively Jesus talking, Jesus claims to be equal with God. Calling God “My Father”, Jesus claims to do the very same work of God. And Jesus goes on to say that he has authority to judge the world, to raise the dead and to give life to all who will believe.
From this point onwards, persecution against Jesus will only intensify.
