According to Jesus, everyone is thirsty… and only His living water can satisfy. So Jesus lovingly invites us: ‘come and drink’.
In the heat of the day, Jesus starts a seemingly casual conversation with a Samaritan woman beside a well. But the long-standing hostility between Jews and Samaritans makes this a controversial encounter. Especially once the moral background of this woman becomes apparent.
Jesus asks the woman for a drink (which I’m not sure he ever receives!). But actually Jesus is most concerned about the woman’s thirst – her spiritual thirst that is.
This woman’s had a staggering five husbands and currently lives with a sixth man (unmarried). This explains why she comes to the drinking well alone and at the hottest part of the day – to miss the crowds.
Jesus identifies that this woman has tried to meet her deep need for love, acceptance, validation and security through a series of dud relationships.
To her and to us Jesus points out:
“Everyone who drinks this water will be thirsty again, 14 but whoever drinks the water I give him will never thirst. Indeed, the water I give him will become in him a spring of water welling up to eternal life.” (John 4:13-14).
Everyone is thirsty…and only Jesus’ living water can satisfy. So He lovingly invites us: ‘come and drink’.
