Make your choice

Make your choice

You cannot serve both God and money.

Jesus instructs His disciples in Matthew 6 to not love money. But, most of us are inclined to love money. And we have lots of it!

Australians generally, and residents of North Epping in particular, are among the wealthy elite. So, how do we who are Christians deal with Jesus’ words that seem so counter-cultural? Surely, given almost everyone is into it, the pursuit of wealthy must be a good thing?

Jesus makes crystal clear that regardless of how clever we are;

No one can serve two masters. Either you will hate the one and love the other, or you will be devoted to the one and despise the other. You cannot serve both God and money. (Matthew 6:24)

What will it look like in our context to be “money haters”? How might we as a church live according to Jesus instructions? And then, if we do, what will be the implications?

One of the outworkings of making a choice for God and not money will be that we need not stress about the things of this world. Jesus says,

Therefore I tell you, do not worry about your life…

But that too sounds counter-cultural. Surely, the less we focus on money the greater our worries will be about life, and finding the basic necessities of food, and drink, and clothing?

What are the antidotes to worrying? Jesus provides the answers.
