A much loved friend of Jesus is dangerously sick. His sisters, Martha and Mary, send for Jesus in hope that he will intervene. Strangely Jesus delays and Lazarus dies.
When Jesus finally travels to Bethany it’s too late. Lazarus has been dead four days. All seems lost and hopeless.
Into this mess Jesus speaks a bold word of promise. “I am the resurrection and the life. He who believes in me will live even though he dies. And whoever lives and believes in me will never die. Do you believe this?” (John 12:25)
Do we believe this? Can Jesus really make such a promise?
Pointing to his coming death and resurrection, Jesus calls us to trust Him. He really is the heaven sent Son of God with authority to give life. By giving life to Lazarus, Jesus demonstrates his unique power and authority.
