The world continues to modify it’s Code of Conduct and typically it moves further away from Jesus’ Code of Conduct. What are disciples of Jesus to understand by Jesus’ assessment and instructions in Matthew 5:17-48?
Jesus provides us with instructions which call for radical righteousness and what appears to be calls for self-mutilation for breaches of His Code
“If your right eye causes you to stumble, gouge it out and throw it away. … (v29)
And if your right hand causes you to stumble, cut it off and throw it away”. (v30)
How should we apply Jesus’ instructions in relation to murder, adultery and lust, divorce, taking of oaths, revenge and love for enemies? For indeed, Jesus sets the bar of righteousness very high:
But I tell you, love your enemies and pray for those who persecute you, (v44)
